Projects
The UAV Collaborative is currently involved in several research and development projects in support of its charter. Specific activities include:

  • planning future UAV image acquisition campaigns
  • developing procedures for operating UAVs in FAA-controlled National Airspace
  • testing and evaluating high-resolution imaging systems
  • integrating imaging payload onto UAVs
  • evaluating data acquisition and control systems for real-time applications
  • testing real-time telemetry systems for payload control and data transfer
  • developing and packaging automated image processing streams
  • transferring new aerospace technologies from research to the operational domain
  • implementing educational research opportunities for university students
Coffee Harvest Optimization Working with coffee growers in Kauai to identify the optimal fields to harvest within the plantation
Fire Monitoring and Analysis Partnering with the U.S. Forest Service to identify forests with the highest fire risks and provide critical decision support for fire management

In September 2002, NASA's solar-powered Pathfinder-Plus UAV was used to conduct a proof-of-concept mission in U.S. national airspace above a 3500 acre commercial coffee plantation in Hawaii

Homeland Security
A small UAV was flown as part of the first response to a scripted emergency scenario in which terrorist activity was simulated in the northern section of the Moffett Federal Airfield, adjacent to NASA Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley.
