Wider Applications
The applied research is further developing the role of UAVs as imaging platforms for tactical fire management. A UAV can operate effectively within the airspace of hazardous fire conditions (unstable air, large obscuring smoke plumes, possible rugged terrain) that might compromise the safety of on-board crewmembers. The ability of UAVs to safely acquire and rapidly deliver data under hazardous conditions will enable disaster managers to better respond to a variety of emergency response situations.
