Mission Plan
The scripted emergency scenario that simulated terrorist activity was initiated at a collapsed-structure site on the morning of May 6, 2004 upon direction from the Incident Command Center. A device was detonated to release an atmospheric plume into the atmosphere to simulate a chemical weapon attack. In response, a UAV equipped with imaging sensors and a chemical detector was immediately deployed from the north end of the west parallel of Moffett Federal Airfield. Within minutes, the UAV was in-flight 800 feet above the target area. The chemical detector proceeded to sample the plume, which contained a constitutent having a resonance similar to a chemical weapon. Following the plume fly-through and the detection of a simulated chemical release, the ICC instructed the UAV operations team to continue the flight in a surveillance pattern. The UAV payload team was instructed to track, monitor and geolocate any suspicious activity.
